Sleep; but in my bed.

We didn’t go to the mountains this weekend as we had hoped (maybe this weekend?).  Saturday was icky, cold and drizzly all day.  Sunday was awesome and we should have gone but no one was really feeling well.  Too bad.  Well, I did get caught up on some reading.  We’re reading King Lear in class now.  That doode’s crazy (well, so is everyone else I guess).  Thanks for stopping by and I hope to have some more stuff up here soon.

One more thing, I caught the new NBC show Heroes on tv last night.  I thought it was really slow going at first.  I understand the need for character development but in a season that normally lasts like 22 – 24 episodes did it need to take that long?  It really got good at the end and I think I might like this series.  I don’t like how all of the heroes are majorly flawed.  They tried to make the people seem too everyman-like.  Peter Parker (Spider-Man) is an everyman but he was also someone to look up to… not a heroine addict or internet porn star as two of the Heroes were.  Other than that I really liked it.  I wonder if you saw it and what did you think?  A couple of twists at the end, eh?  Let me know!

Huh, I guess I did have something to say…

Sleeping in an Aspen Grove

I got about four hours of sleep last night cos I had to finish a paper for a class today.  That’s the third paper this week alone.  I’m burned out; I need a break.  Luckily I called my wife today and she said we might go up to the mountians and check out the changing aspen.  For those of you who don’t live in Colorado or areas with aspen among evergreens, visiting the mountains this time of year is like seeing a two month long sunset.  It will be nice to get away for the day.  I promise to post up some pictures as soon as possible so those of you might know just what it is you are missing.

Also, I’d like to at some point write about the concept of grace and what it means to me and people in general.  I was in the middle of Philip Yancey’s What’s So Amazing About Grace? when the semester started.  If you haven’t read it I encourage you to.  It has changed my perception of my life (truly living it is another story).  Anyway, my biggest fear is that this won’t happen until after this semester when things quiet down again.  But now that I think of it, that would be right around Christmas time… pretty good timing.

tick to the tock my peeps…

Jesus Christ was a white, middle-class republican – www.freederekwebb.com

The title makes it sound as if he was incarcerated and needed some bail money… I’ve been a fan of Derek Webb since his days with Caedmon’s Call and now more so.  The subjects that he tackles in these songs really make you think (and if you don’t you’re not listening).  I stumbled upon this website by accident and it appears you have as well.

Right now you can download Derek Webb’s entire album Mockingbird for free at freederekwebb.com.  I don’t think his intent is to have the answers but to get the conversation started in church.  It’s a message I think is highly relatable to this present day and one Chirst’s Bride must at least hear. Also, be sure to check out his myspace HERE for recent updates. Below are some sample lyrics taken from his MySpace:   … continue reading this entry.

Nerds and Geeks and Dorks, Oh My!

This is from a paper that was written by a classmate of mine in our Writing from a Cultural Perspective class over the summer.  I’ve posted it with her permission as a lighthearted look at those of us “closet geeks.”  I loved how she catagorized the nerd, geek and dork and also the commentary for each class.  It was funny how she and I along with a gaming dork all found ourselves congregated to one side of the classroom.  If you have any comments for her please post them and I’ll make sure she gets them. Anyway, enough of my babbling, enjoy…

A Cultural Memoir

by Debra Colao (her MySpace link here)

What is the difference between a nerd, dork and a geek?  Most people think that they are all synonymous, when in fact there are distinctions between the three.  Honestly though, nerds, geeks and dorks are all from a similar mold.  They are like water, ice and steam.  They all have the same chemical compound, but appear in three different forms.  … continue reading this entry.

Are we a “Christian Band” or Christians in a band?

There is a great article in the online magazine lowercasepeople.com right now about the whole topic of the Christian Band label.  If you know anything about me it’s that I love music.  Often Jackie (my wife, not Robinson the baseball player… I think he’s dead anyway so why would I be talking to him?) and I have these conversations about whether a band is “Christian” or not (whatever that means).I’ve posted the link at the bottom of the page but I’ll also post the interview.  It was a discussion between MAE drummer, Jacob Marshall and two guys from the band Mute Math, Paul Meany (vocals) and Darren King (drums).  Both bands have been in the Christian music market but are now trying to shed that mantle.  It’s a good read.I’ve only excerpted the following for the whole discussion visit www.lowercasepeople.com: … continue reading this entry.

Crickey!

So I slothely (I don’t care if it’s not a word I’m an English major so I can make ‘em up… just somah the perks) awoke this morning to the brisk Rocky Mountain air and ran outside as fast as I could to get the paper.  I’d be lying if I said the temperature was the only reason I acted in such haste but the real reason was so that no one would see me (I didn’t want to draw any added attention to my Hercules meets Jabba the Hut physique).  Anyway, as I slid the paper out from its blue plastic coat (that never protects it from getting wet from my sprinklers) a little picture on the front caught my eye.  It was a picture of Steve Irwin the famed zoologist from the Australian Zoo.  The title read “Irwin dead at age 44.”
